AGEs increase VEGF expression in RPE, an effect reversed by overexpression of galectin-3. VEGF mRNA was quantified by real time RT-PCR after exposure of control or transfected RPE to AGE modified albumin (200 μg/ml). There is a significant increase in VEGF expression after treatment with AGEs (p<0.05), whereas this response is completely lost in the galectin-3 transfectants. Each column represents the mean of n = 3 experiments with reactions normalised for 28S mRNA.
