Nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 19 (CK19) mRNA in plasma and circulating cells of controls (C) and patients with colorectal cancer (T). Six patients (T2, T4–T8) are shown with at least one positive marker in plasma and cells. One patient (T3) displayed a positive mRNA marker only in cells and one patient (T1) revealed a positive mRNA marker only in plasma. β-actin showed that all samples displayed detectable plasma and circulating cell RNA.
