Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) is a stimulant of human β-defensin 1 and 2 (hBD1, hBD2) mRNA expression. MKN7 cells were incubated with IL-1β (5 ng/ml) for 24 hours. As seen in fig 2 ▶, the kinetics of the increase in hBD2 expression were more rapid than for hBD1. The magnitude of response was much lower than that observed with Helicobacter pylori.
