Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) is a stimulant of human β-defensin 1 and 2 (hBD1, hBD2) mRNA expression. MKN7 cells were incubated with IL-1β (5 ng/ml) for 24 hours. As seen in fig 2, the kinetics of the increase in hBD2 expression were more rapid than for hBD1. The magnitude of response was much lower than that observed with Helicobacter pylori.
