Grades of inflammation in the colorectal mucosa: (A) 0=no inflammation; (B) 1=mild inflammation—that is, the inflammatory infiltrate is confined to the luminal part of the mucosa; (C) 2=moderate inflammation—that is, the inflammatory infiltrate extends beyond the base of the crypts; and (D) 3=severe inflammation—that is, the heavy inflammatory infiltrate occupies the entire lamina propria and infiltrates the lamina muscularis mucosa.
