In separate runs, participants were shown Arabic numerals (symbolic condition) or random dot arrays (non-symbolic condition) for the values 1–4 and 6–9 and had to indicate whether the stimulus presented was smaller or larger than 5. Non-symbolic stimuli were controlled for cumulative surface area (AREA) and individual element size (SIZE).
