HFF cells infected with wild-type (A) or with the L47A mutant (B to D) bacmidgr viruses were fixed, stained, and embedded and thin-sectioned in situ as described in Materials and Methods. “Double-ringed” (large arrows) and empty (small arrows) nuclear capsids typical of infections with wild-type virus are seen in panel A. More irregular-looking capsids (e.g., top-left corner, Panel B) and “tubules” (arrows) are seen in panels B to D.
