Each circle represents the status of one CpG site in one sequence (empty circle when unmethylated, filled circle when methylated). A group of nine circles aligned horizontally corresponds to a methylation pattern. The patterns from the same crypt form a block. Notice that the BGN locus of the 87 year-old patient contains only eight CpG sites due to a single nucleotide polymorphism (gray sites).
