Butyrate-mediated modulation of IL-1β-stimulated IL-8 secretion by primary IEC. Semiconfluent HIPEC monolayers from three different patients (approximately 10⁵ cells/ml) were cultured overnight in the presence or absence of 5 mm butyrate. Butyrate-treated and -untreated cells were then stimulated with IL-1β (1 ng/ml) for 24 h in triplicate. The IL-8 content of cell free supernatants was measured by ELISA (*P < 0·01 versus media only, #P < 0·05 versus IL-1β only).
