Modulation of alveolar macrophage (AM) cytokine production by PCT-233 (PCT) and inactive PCT-233 (iPCT). AM were treated with PCT-233 and iPCT-233 (0·05%) and LPS (10 ng/ml) for 48 h and TNF and IL-10 levels were measured in cell-free supernatants. PCT-233 significantly increased both TNF and IL-10 production (‡P < 0·002 and *P < 0·02, respectively) compared with control, whereas inactive PCT-233 significantly (P < 0·002) increased TNF release only.
