The distance of the GRE from the initiation site is responsible for the low basal expression of IMD2. Wild-type cells were transformed with the indicated plasmids, and transformants were grown to exponential phase and then treated or not treated with guanine (Gua). β-Galactosidase (βGal) activity of the lacZ fusions expressed from the indicated plasmids was measured.
