Stimulus and Methods. Subjects viewed contrast-reversing checkerboards (pilot and Experiment 1; Experiment 2 used gratings, not shown) that varied in their contrast and were presented for 500 msec with fixed temporal intervals between their onsets (SOA). To control attention, subjects monitored a string of letters for a target letter (see text for details).
