Brain samples were homogenized in formic acid as described in Materials and methods. Aliquots of the extracts were neutralized and subjected to PAGE and immunobloting. p4 bands migrated above the 3 kDa standards and bound mAb 6E10. p3 bands migrated near the 3 kDa standard and bound R162 or R226 but did not bind mAb 6E10

^aThere was only one band in this extract. Its level was too low to be revealed by mAb 6E10 and so could not be identified as p3 or p4
