Viable and dead intracellular bacteria recovered from AA or BB monocytes. Cells were infected in vitro with B. abortus 2308, incubated for 12 to 48 h, and then lysed. Intracellular bacteria were stained (with SYTO9 and propidium iodide) and analyzed by flow cytometry. SYTO9 stains viable cells, and propidium iodide stains dead cells. The experiment included 10 AA and 10 BB subjects, each tested twice in independent experiments.
