Tissue concentrations of unesterified (upper panels) and esterified (lower panels) cholesterol in NPC+/+/LDLR+/+ and NPC−/−/LDLR+/+ mice fed the basal diet and this same diet with additional amounts of cholesterol. At 6 weeks of age, half of the animals of each genotype were placed on the basal diet supplemented with 0.4% cholesterol while the remainder were maintained on the basal diet alone. One week later, the concentration of unesterified and esterified cholesterol was measured in various organs. There were 6–9 animals in each group. The asterisk (*) identifies those values found in the mice given additional dietary cholesterol that were significantly different from the corresponding values in those fed the basal diet alone.
