Other signaling systems that activate calcium release from internal stores do not cause calcium oscillations. (A) Simple, nonoscillatory rises in [Ca2+]i were observed in response to ACh (100 μM). Data are plotted as mean ± SEM, and the raw data from individual cells are shown in the Inset. (B) 5-HT (100 μM) also produced simple calcium responses. (C) Similar nonoscillatory responses occurred on application of caffeine (10 mM), which causes calcium release activated by ryanodine receptors.
