Suggested role for TNFα in the immune response to mycobacteria in the human lung. The organism is phagacytosed by activated alveolar macrophages. This triggers TNFα release which stimulates clonal expansion of T cells, release of IFN-α, intracellular killing of mycobacteria, macrophage apoptosis and granuloma formation.
