Experimental design (see text for details). Note that transplanted donor cell preparations are not composed exclusively of hepatocytes, and thus some nonparenchymal cells also will be transplanted. However, these cells are not stimulated to divide in recipient liver, so they represent at most a small fraction (<0.1%; see Discussion) of the endogenous nonparenchymal cell number, and their potential as a source of newly developing hepatocytes will be small.
