The three vertical lines to the right of each chromosome ideogram represent the balanced state (center) and the lower (left) and upper (right) thresholds used as diagnostic cutoff values for losses and gains, respectively. The areas of tandem repetitive DNA clusters are gray shaded. Because no representative fluorescence intensities can be measured in these regions due to suppression with Cot1 DNA, they were excluded from the evaluation. Whereas only one imbalance was found in the dysplasia of patient 5 (A), almost all alterations identified in the SCC of patient 1 (B) were already present in the respective dysplasia. The losses on 4q detected in the dysplasia and SCC of patient 1 by CGH (B) were confirmed by LOH analysis at the microsatellite locus D4S426 (4q35) (data not shown).
