Table 5.

Migration and Apoptosis of OVA-Specific T Cells in the CNS

Injection day MBP T cells Injection day OVA T cells Day of sampling Average number of labeled cells in spinal cord Average % of apoptotic cells
Resting Active Normal Apoptotic
− (n = 3) 0 4 0 0 0
− (n = 3) 0 4 0 0 0
0 (n = 3) 0 4 2.9 ± 1.4 2.3 ± 1.2 ND*
0 (n = 3) 0 4 97 ± 45 14 ± 5.7 13 ± 1.1

The average number of infiltrating OVA-specific T cells in a spinal cord section is given ± SEM. Percentage of apoptotic cells is calculated by taking the average (with SEM) of the percentage of apoptotic cells from three individual animals.

*ND, not determined; the numbers of cells in spinal cord sections of animals in this group were too low to calculate a reliable average percentage of apoptotic cells.
