TABLE 5.
Results of rechallenge of ferrets with a lethal dose of homologous H5N1 virus after completion of oseltamivir treatment
Virus | Oseltamivir regimen | Rechallenge virus dose (EID50/ferret)a | Range of prechallenge HI titersb

No. of ferrets that survived/total no. | No. of ferrets with clinical signs of disease/total no.c | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A/Vietnam/1203/04 | A/HK/213/03 | A/Turkey/15/06 | |||||
A/Vietnam/1203/04 | 25 mg/kg/day, 24-h delay | 102 | 20-40 | 80-160 | NT | 3/3 | 0/3 |
A/Turkey/15/06 | 10 mg/kg/day, 24-h delay | 107 | 20-40 | 320-640 | 160-320 | 3/3 | 0/3 |
Three weeks after the initial H5N1 virus inoculation, surviving oseltamivir-treated ferrets were reinoculated with 102 EID50 of A/Vietnam/1203/04 or 107 EID50 of A/Turkey/15/06 virus.
HI titers against homologous and heterologous viruses 3 weeks after initial inoculation (expressed as reciprocal values, e.g., 40 versus 1:40). NT, not tested.
Clinical signs of disease were weight loss, temperature increase, respiratory signs, and inactivity index. Nasal washes were collected on day 3 p.i. All were below the level of detection (<0.75 log10 EID50/ml).
