Figure 1 The likelihood of an individual developing Barrett's oesophagus might be determined by a combination of host genetics and environmental factors. The host genetics will include normal variations in multiple genes including polymorphisms and microsatellites. Examples of these changes are shown. The specific genes involved and the identification of particular environmental factors are still being elucidated.
