Neoplasms (calli) resulting from application of the indicated amounts of the bruchins were removed from pods with a scalpel and weighed 1 week after treatment (10). Each bar represents the mean ± SEM for six pods (blocks). Pea plants (derived from line C887-332; ref. 10) homozygous for the Np gene were grown in a greenhouse with light provided by a combination of high-pressure sodium lamps and fluorescent tubes. Bruchins were applied as 1-μl drops in 50% (vol/vol) ethanol to pods at the late flat pod stage (12).
