Schematic diagram of an electric field-induced reorganization of lipids in a confined patch of supported bilayer membrane. A two-component system is shown in which the negatively charged lipid (shaded) builds up a concentration gradient toward the anode side of the corral. This represents an equilibrium distribution where the field-induced drift is balanced by diffusion.
