Percentages of TUNEL-positive and PCNA-labeled cells in bacterially inoculated guinea pig MEs in vivo. With focal delivery of SP600125, a significant local increase in the percentage of TUNEL-positive cells was observed compared with that in an area 500 μm from the catheter (*, P < 0.05). In contrast, there was no significant difference between the areas 100 μm, 200 μm, and 500 μm from the catheter. On the other hand, the percentages of PCNA-labeled cells were decreased locally in the catheter area and in areas 100 μm and 200 μm away compared with that in the area 500 μm from the catheter (**, P < 0.05). Values are means ± SE. Cells were counted from six locations in three different guinea pigs.
