The position of the major residue targeted for acetylation in vitro, K273, is of particular interest since it is encoded in the region of the HIV-1 proviral genome where the pol and vif genes overlap. This implies that genetic constraints are likely imposed by the functional requirements of one molecule on the other, perhaps in both directions.
