gld TNF^−/− mice infected with L. major fail to control their lesions. gld TNF^−/−, TNF^−/−, gld, and control C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice (six mice per group) were infected subcutaneously with 3 × 10⁶ L. major promastigotes. Increase in footpad thickness was monitored by weekly measurements. The sizes of the lesions were determined by subtracting the values obtained from the uninfected footpad from those of the infected one. The error bars represent the standard deviations of the mean amounts of footpad increase.
