Genes are ordered from least to most stress-responsive (according to d). The value of d represents the mean proportion of time points, among the 19 tissue-treatment combinations considered, at which a gene was differentially expressed. Cluster IDs represent gene groupings determined by the HOPACH clustering algorithm (see Methods). The development cluster analysis was carried out with respect to the developmental series conditions of Schmid et al. (2005) [41]. The stress cluster analysis was carried out with respect to expression responses observed under each of the 111 tissue-treatment-time combinations examined in this study. The jth digit in each cluster ID indicates the group to which a gene was assigned in the jth iteration of the HOPACH algorithm (see [76]). Heat maps corresponding to development and stress clustering solutions are provided in section 1C of additional file 1.
