Preservation of the tissue architecture after 8-h (T8) incubation of uninfected bovine explants. While shorter villi and some desquamated cells in the lumen (arrowheads) were observed in the terminal ileum, excellent preservation of the crypt epithelium was observed with explants of the terminal colon and the terminal rectum under the same culture conditions, as in uncultured, uninfected explants (T0).
