Figure 7.— — Proposed model of gametogenesis in minus cells. In wild-type (wt) cells, plus gamete-specific genes are repressed and minus gamete-specific genes are activated by MID. In mid mutants, loss of function of MID fails to repress plus gamete-specific genes and activate minus genes; therefore cells differentiate into pseudo-plus cells. Nitrogen starvation is able to activate MTD1 through a MID-independent pathway. In MTD1 knockdowns, low levels (level 1) of MID are able to repress plus gamete-specific genes. However, MID cannot reach its threshold level (level 2) to activate minus gamete-specific genes due to the defect in MTD1. Therefore, cells fail to display any gametic phenotypes.
