Mechanism of pleiotropic signaling by structurally diverse β-agonists. In this depiction, each agonist is denoted by a subscript (i.e., A1, A2, etc.), and each unique conformation of the receptor is denoted by a superscript (i.e., R*1, R*2, etc.). Each conformation represents a distinct signaling pathway. A given agonist can stabilize one or more of these active conformations, based on the structure of the compound. This leads to a portfolio of signals that is evoked by each agonist.
