Regulation of ribosomal protein genes encoding paralogous forms of L31 and L33. The transcripts for rpmE1 and rpmE2 encoding L31 with and without a zinc-binding motif, respectively, were examined along with those for rpmG2 and rpmG3, encoding paralogous forms of L33 without zinc-binding motifs. The wild-type (WT) and Δzur (S700) mutant cells were grown in YEME medium and either untreated (−) or treated with 2 mM EDTA (E) or 0.5 mM diamide (D) for 1 h before RNA preparation for S1 analyses. Protected DNA fragments were visualized and quantified by a phosphorimage analyzer (FLA-2000; Fuji). Average values from three independent experiments are presented. The rRNA in each sample (50 μg of total RNA) was monitored by gel electrophoresis as a loading control.
