Effect of CD8⁺ cells from an HIV-infected individual on HIV replication in macrophages. Mφ were isolated from PBMC of an HIV-seronegative donor, allowed to differentiate for 7 days, and then infected with HIV-1_SF162. Infected Mφ were cultured in the absence (•) or presence (▪) of an equal number of activated CD8⁺ cells from an HIV-infected donor. Cell-free culture fluids were collected every 3 days and monitored for particle-associated RT activity. CD8⁺ cells were removed from the coculture 6 days after peak RT activity, and the remaining adherent cells were monitored for virus production (□). The data are representative of two separate experiments giving similar results.
