Table 1.

Safety factors of the glucose transporter and sucrase

Mice Glucose transporter Sucrase
Virgin 2.8 ± 0.3 2.6 ± 0.2
Lactating 1.5 ± 0.3 0.8 ± 0.1

Both virgin and lactating mice were studied while consuming the 55%-sucrose ration. Safety factors were calculated as the Vmax of the glucose transporter or sucrase summed over the whole length of the small intestine (in units of mmol/day), divided by the dietary intake of sucrose (hence of glucose) in the same individual mouse (also in units of mmol/day). Sample sizes were six virgin mice and four lactating mice. Both safety factors for virgin mice are significantly higher than 1.0 (P = 0.002 for the glucose transporter, P = 0.001 for sucrase), whereas neither value for lactating mice differs significantly from 1.0 (P = 0.21 and P = 0.06, respectively).
