Time course of caffeate reduction with fructose or hydrogen as the electron donor by cell suspensions of A. woodii incubated in the absence or presence of CO₂. Cell suspensions of A. woodii (1.0 mg protein/ml) grown on fructose were preincubated either under an H₂ atmosphere (⧫), under an H₂-CO₂ atmosphere (▾), under an N₂-CO₂ atmosphere with fructose (20 mM) (▪), or under an N₂ atmosphere with fructose (▴) for 10 min. Caffeate (2 mM) was added from a stock solution. At the times indicated, samples were withdrawn and analyzed to determine the caffeate concentration as described in Materials and Methods.
