Co-culture of lung epithelial cells with alveolar macrophages limits vaccinia infection. LA-4 lung epithelial cells were cultured alone or with 1% or 5% added MH-S alveolar macrophages for 2 days prior to infection with Vac-FL at MOI of 0.1. Numbers of viral pfu were adjusted to account for differing total numbers of cells in various wells. (A) Photon flux data are shown for Vac-FL 24 h after infection at MOI of 0.1. Data are expressed as mean values ± SEM for background subtracted photon flux normalized to bioluminescence produced from infection of LA-4 cells alone.
