Schematic representation of Shigella pathogenesis. The invasion of the intestinal mucosal cells by S. flexneri is regulated by a number of virulence factors, including the transcriptional regulator, VirF. The VirF protein then activates the transcription of downstream virulence factors under the proper environmental conditions for invasion.
