JKD is required for QC identity and stem cell maintenance. Root length (a) and meristem cell number (b) are reduced in jkd-4 and jkd-2 compared with that of wild-type (Col-0). Lugol-staining cells (arrow) designate differentiated columella cells, which neighbor defective QC cells (asterisk) in jkd-i. SCR expression in 2-dpg wild-type (e), and jkd-4 (f) roots, and in wild-type (g,h) and jkd-4 (i,j) embryos at heart stage (g,i) and torpedo stage (h,j).
