YFP-MreB is localized evenly throughout E. coli when FtsZ is inhibited. E. coli AV23-1 carrying plasmids pFAD38 (sulA gene under arabinose control) and pLE7 (yfp-mreB under the control of the lac promoter) was incubated for 2 h at 42°C in the presence of 0.2% arabinose (to induce SulA production and inhibit FtsZ) and 50 μM IPTG (to induce YFP-MreB). Fluorescent images (left) indicated that YFP-MreB was distributed throughout the cells (phase images are on the right), including at the poles and in regions near the poles.
