Peptidoglycan from E. coli strains MG1655 (parental) and AV23-1 (ΔPBPs 5 and 7) was isolated and treated as described in Materials and Methods. The FtsZ-dependent increases in pentapeptide levels were consistent in two independent experiments and four independent samples (not shown).
