A single exposure to a resident-intruder model of stress results in a significant decrease in the number of BrdU-labeled cells in the dentate gyrus of the intruder marmoset monkey. Adult monkeys were placed individually in the home cage of a conspecific for 1 hr. After this time, the monkeys were removed and injected with BrdU, a marker of proliferating cells and their progeny. Two hours later, the monkeys were perfused and the brains processed for BrdU labeling.
