Table 1.

Platelet counts and human PF4 levels in inflammatory models in hPF4+ mice

Injection Drop in platelet count, % of baseline PF4 plasma level, kU/mL PF4 level in lungs, U/mg protein
PBS, 200 μL IV 92 ± 11 3.65 ± 1.30 583 ± 271
Thrombin, 80 U/kg IV 72 ± 11* 7.67 ± 1.00 1087 ± 99
PBS, 200 μL IP 100 ± 17 2.57 ± 0.90 656 ± 120
LPS, 40 mg/kg IP 75 ± 13* 3.05 ± 0.77 991 ± 218

Mice (n = 4-6 per arm) were injected with either phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 80 U/kg thrombin or 40 mg/kg LPS. Compared are results of PBS solute only (200 μL/mouse) 10 minutes after thrombin (80 U/kg in 200 μL IV) and 2 hours after LPS (40 mg/kg in 200 μL IP). The means (± 1 SD) are shown. Statistical analysis between groups was performed using the Student t test (A-C). Note: Platelets release PF4 in vivo after either thrombin or LPS injection into mice.
