Electrophoretic behavior of the E[tRNAPhe:A5] species in the presence of 2 mM Mg2+ (A) and in the absence of magnesium ions (B). In each gel image, the two outside lanes contain duplex control RNA molecules, with lengths of 188 bp and 200 bp as indicated; the remaining seven lanes contain heteroduplex molecules with n phasing base pairs (Fig. 2; n = 0 to 12). Electrophoresis was performed on nondenaturing 6% polyacrylamide gels (acrylamide/N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide ratio, 29:1) at room temperature; gel buffer was 10 mM sodium phosphate, pH 7.2/2 mM MgCl2 (A) or 10 mM sodium phosphate, pH 7.2/0.125 mM Na2EDTA (B).
