Effects of equibiaxial cyclic stretch on FA localization for three different, but representative cells. (A) Cell on an unstretched membrane. (B) Cell subjected to cyclic stretch (10%, 0.25 Hz) for 2 min. (C) Cell subjected to cyclic stretch (10%, 0.25 Hz) for 30 min. Note that stretching for 2 minutes in panel B induced a significant increase in FA associated vinculin staining, particularly at the periphery of the cell. Total basal cell area and the vinculin-containing FA area are shown in the middle and right column, respectively, but more importantly note that the FA-area ratios (FA area/total cell area) were 0.098, 0.161, and 0.123 for panels A, B, and C, respectively.
