A configuration of links between a multineuronal spike train A and a subtrain B[w]. The intersections can be eliminated one by one, by uncrossing a pair of links whose spikes in train A are the closest. The reduction of a general pattern of intersecting links by a sequence of single uncrossings does not depend on the spike labels, and does not place additional restrictions on the strain. Condition 4 requires that each single uncrossing does not increase the strain; these are further analyzed in Figure 3.
