Photo of a blood clot sample. Whole blood clots were prepared from either fresh porcine or human blood by aliquoting 1.5 or 2.0 ml into 10-ml glass tubes (BD Vacutainer™, Franklin Lakes, NJ), immersing the tubes in a 37 °C water bath for 3 h and storing the clots at 5 °C for at least 3 days prior to assessment of the properties, which ensured complete clot retraction. The typical size of the clot samples was about 7–10 mm in diameter and the typical mass of each clot was about 0.5 g.
