The majority of BrdU-labeled cells expressed the immature and mature neuronal marker TuJ1 or the mature neuronal marker NeuN. A considerably smaller proportion of BrdU-labeled cells expressed GFAP, an astroglial marker. In the older age group, the percentage of BrdU-labeled cells expressing TuJ1 was reduced.
