Table 1.

Definitions of diabetes commonly employed in recent epidemiologic literature.

WHO, 1985(129) Fasting glucose ≥ 140 or a 2hr 75g OGTT glucose ≥ 200
WHO, 1999(113) Fasting glucose ≥ 126 or a 2hr 75g OGTT glucose ≥ 200
ADA, 1997(112) Focused on a fasting glucose ≥ 126, but also recognizes a casual or 2hr 75g OGGT ≥ 200; therefore, epidemiologic studies based on the ADA criteria may be based exclusively on fasting glucose levels or include information from a 2hr 75g OGTT.

All criteria are stated in mg/dL and use venous plasma. WHO, World Health Organization; ADA, American Diabetes Association; OGTT, oral glucose tolerance test
