Table 2 Adjusted regression coefficients (with 95% confidence intervals) for association between inflammatory markers and FEV1 % predicted in participants with and without obstructive lung disease (OLD).

Variable β with 95% confidence intervals* p value†
With OLD Without OLD
IL‐6 −5.3 (−9.1 to −1.5) −3.1 (−4.3 to −1.9) 0.09
TNF 3.6 (−1.8 to 9) −1.9 (−3.7 to 0.1) 0.03
CRP −2.2 (−4.8 to 0.4) −2 (−3 to −1) 0.6

IL‐6, interleukin 6; TNF, tumour necrosis factor; CRP, C‐reactive protein.

*Regression coefficients (β) denote the estimated difference in FEV1 % predicted associated with an increase of one log unit in individual inflammatory markers. β adjusted for age, race, sex, site, smoking status (current smokers, ever smoked versus never smoked), pack years of smoking, body mass index (>30 and <20 kg/m2), history of congestive heart failure, diabetes, and oral steroid use.

†p value for interaction between obstructive lung disease and the association between FEV1 and inflammatory marker.
