Growth velocity depends weakly on force. (A) A microtubule length history tracked under a range of loads held constant using the force clamping routine. The growth rate is variable at all loads, with no dramatic increases in rate as the load is reduced. (B) Microtubule growth velocity is weakly dependent on force (applied in force-clamp mode) both in simulation and experiment. The high variability is the result of variability in assembly at the nanoscale.
