Stimulation of the P cell in the skin can produce greater transmission than stimulation of the soma. (A) Superimposed EPSPs of greater than 5 mV produced in the AP cell (Upper) when the P cell (Lower) anterior minor field was stimulated. (B) Stimulation of the P cell soma so as to produce a collision with a peripherally elicited P cell impulse. Stimulating the presynaptic cell’s soma produced an EPSP of approximately 1 mV (solid arrow). The collision in the same experiment confirmed that the EPSP in A was produced by the P cell, because the collision eliminated the large EPSP (dashed arrow).
